DESCRIPTION

If you want to see the very best of Uganda’s wildlife and primates without committing to a week or more on the road, this 4-day safari pairs two of the country’s most rewarding national parks into a single, efficient circuit: Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda’s most visited park and one of the most biodiverse protected areas in Africa, and Kibale Forest National Park, the primate capital of the world. Between them, these two parks cover open savannah game drives, a world-class boat cruise, the bizarre spectacle of lions resting in trees, and a full morning tracking wild chimpanzees through ancient rainforest, all without the long, multi-day driving commitment of a full Uganda circuit.

The two parks sit just three hours apart by road, which makes this combination unusually efficient: a single transfer day connects them, leaving the other three days almost entirely free for activities rather than driving. Queen Elizabeth delivers four of the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, and buffalo, with no rhino present in this park) across open plains, a rift valley escarpment, and the Kazinga Channel, one of Africa’s richest wildlife waterways. Kibale delivers Africa’s highest concentration of wild chimpanzees, a forest holding 1,500 individuals across at least 13 communities, alongside 12 other primate species and over 370 bird species.

This itinerary is ideal for travelers who want genuine wildlife diversity in a short window, for those combining it with a longer Rwanda or Kenya trip, or for anyone who has already done gorilla trekking and wants to add Uganda’s savannah and forest wildlife without the cost or time commitment of a second primate permit beyond chimps. At Pick and Transfer Safaris, we handle the chimpanzee permit booking with the Uganda Wildlife Authority, all park entry fees, lodge bookings, and the full round-trip transport, so the only decision left to you is how many photographs to take of lions sitting in trees.

If you have more time and want to add mountain gorilla trekking to this circuit, our 10-Day Uganda Grand Safari covers Murchison Falls, Kibale, Queen Elizabeth, and Bwindi in one complete journey, or this 4-day itinerary can be extended by a few days to include Bwindi directly (see Extensions below). For chimpanzees alone, see our 3-Day Chimpanzee Tour in Uganda. To check dates and get a quote, contact our team and we will respond within 24 hours.

TRAVEL PLAN

Day 1: Entebbe to Queen Elizabeth National Park

Your safari begins with an early to mid-morning pickup from your hotel in Entebbe or Kampala. Queen Elizabeth National Park lies approximately 410 kilometres southwest, and your driver-guide will take the Kampala-Mbarara-Bushenyi route, the most direct path and the one most commonly used for this itinerary, covering the distance in roughly six to seven hours including stops.

The drive itself is a genuine introduction to Uganda’s geography: leaving the lakeside lowlands around Entebbe and Kampala, the road climbs through the rolling agricultural plateau around Masaka, with views over Lake Victoria’s northern shoreline, before continuing into the cattle country of the Ankole region around Mbarara, home to the long-horned Ankole cattle that have shaped this landscape for centuries. An optional stop at the Uganda Equator crossing at Kayabwe, around two hours from Entebbe, is a classic photo opportunity, and a lunch stop in Mbarara breaks the journey roughly two-thirds of the way through. From Mbarara, the final stretch heads west and the landscape opens dramatically into the rift valley floor, with Lake Mburo visible in the distance and the first views of Queen Elizabeth’s open plains appearing as you approach the park boundary.

Arrive at your lodge on the Mweya Peninsula, surrounded on three sides by the Kazinga Channel and Lake Edward, in the late afternoon. Settle in, enjoy a sundowner overlooking the channel, where hippos and elephants are often visible from the lodge itself, and have dinner ahead of the first full day of activities tomorrow.

Meals: Lunch, Dinner

Queen Elizabeth National Park covers nearly 2,000 square kilometres of savannah, wetland, crater lakes, and forest, and is home to over 95 mammal species and 610 recorded bird species, making it Uganda’s single most biodiverse national park and its most visited.

The day begins early with a game drive across the Kasenyi plains, the park’s most productive open savannah for big game. This open, grassy terrain, framed by the distant Rwenzori Mountains, regularly produces sightings of lions, elephants, cape buffaloes, Ugandan kob (the park’s most abundant antelope and a favoured prey species for the resident lion prides), warthogs, spotted hyenas, and a striking range of birdlife including the African fish eagle and the elegant grey crowned crane, Uganda’s national bird. Allow two to three hours for the morning drive.

After returning to the lodge for lunch, the early afternoon is dedicated to the two-hour boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel, widely regarded as one of the best pure wildlife boat safaris anywhere in East Africa. The channel, a 40-kilometre natural waterway linking Lake George and Lake Edward, holds extraordinarily dense concentrations of hippos, some of the largest pods in Africa, alongside enormous numbers of Nile crocodiles basking on the banks, herds of buffalo and elephant coming down to drink, and a continuous procession of waterbirds including pelicans, herons, kingfishers, and the rare African skimmer. The boat moves slowly along both banks, and your guide will point out and explain the behaviour of whatever the channel has on offer that day.

In the late afternoon, the day continues with a drive to the remote Ishasha sector, roughly two hours south of Mweya, in search of Uganda’s most unusual wildlife spectacle: lions that climb trees. Ishasha’s resident prides regularly rest in the branches of large fig and acacia trees, a behaviour found in only two places on the entire African continent, here and in Tanzania’s Lake Manyara National Park. No single explanation for the behaviour has been definitively proven, though most researchers believe it offers relief from biting insects and a cooler vantage point in the heat of the day. Sightings are never guaranteed, but Ishasha consistently produces some of the best odds in Africa for this genuinely strange and memorable encounter. The drive through Ishasha’s open acacia plains is also productive for general game, including topi, buffalo, and elephant. Overnight at a lodge in or near the Ishasha sector, or return to Mweya depending on your itinerary preference; we will confirm the best option for your dates at booking.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After breakfast, check out and begin the scenic drive north to Kibale Forest National Park. From Queen Elizabeth, the route covers approximately 160 kilometres and takes three to four hours, passing through Kasese town beneath the dramatic, often cloud-wrapped slopes of the Rwenzori Mountains, Africa’s third-highest range and one of the few places on the continent with permanent glaciers, before climbing north into the cooler highlands around Fort Portal.

You will reach before noon, and prepare for the chimpanzee tracking that will begin at 2pm. You will get in for the chimpanzee tracking activity where you will be allowed one hour face to face with chimpanzees in the tropical rain forest.

You will have your morning breakfast, and then get on the return Journey to Kampala or Entebbe International Airport for your outbound flight.

GOOD TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

Minimum age: Chimpanzee trekking is open to travelers aged 15 and above. Game drives, the Kazinga Channel cruise, and the Bigodi Wetland walk have no minimum age requirement, making this itinerary well suited to families with younger children who are not yet old enough to trek.

Fitness: This is one of the more accessible Uganda itineraries from a physical standpoint. Game drives and boat cruises require no particular fitness level. The chimpanzee trek at Kibale involves walking on forest trails for anywhere from 30 minutes to a few hours, generally on flatter terrain than gorilla trekking in Bwindi, and is manageable for most travelers with a moderate level of fitness.

What to pack: For game drives, light, neutral-coloured clothing, a hat, sunscreen, and binoculars. For the chimpanzee trek, long trousers and sleeves, sturdy closed shoes, a light rain jacket, insect repellent, and a camera without flash. A light jacket is useful for early morning game drives and the cooler evenings around Kibale’s higher elevation.

Chimpanzee permit: Kibale chimp permits are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority at $250 per person for foreign non-residents (2026 rate), reduced to $200 during the low-season months of April, May, and November. Permits must be paid in full at the time of booking. We secure your permit as part of this package and recommend confirming your dates as early as possible during peak season (June to October and December to February).

Park entry fees: Queen Elizabeth National Park entry is charged per day of your stay and is included in this package. No special permit is required for game drives or the Kazinga Channel cruise beyond standard park entrance fees.

Best time to visit: Both parks are rewarding year-round. The dry seasons (June to October and December to February) offer the best game viewing conditions in Queen Elizabeth, as animals concentrate around permanent water sources, and the most comfortable chimp trekking conditions at Kibale. The wet seasons (March to May and November) bring lush scenery and excellent birdwatching to both parks, along with lower visitor numbers and reduced permit pricing at Kibale.

Visas: Uganda visas can be applied for in advance through the Uganda e-Visa portal. Confirm your specific entry requirements before travel.

WHY THIS COMBINATION WORKS SO WELL

Queen Elizabeth and Kibale complement each other almost perfectly. Queen Elizabeth is about space and scale: open horizons, big sky, and the slow unfolding rhythm of a game drive or boat cruise, where wildlife reveals itself gradually across a wide landscape. Kibale is the opposite: dense, vertical, and immediate, a forest where wildlife appears suddenly at close range and demands your full attention in the moment. Few short Uganda itineraries offer such a complete contrast in landscape and wildlife experience within just three driving hours of each other, which is exactly why this pairing has become one of the most popular short circuits in the country.

It is also worth noting that this itinerary does not include mountain gorilla trekking, and that is by design rather than oversight. For travelers who have already trekked gorillas in Rwanda or on a previous Uganda trip, or who are saving that experience for a separate visit, this 4-day circuit delivers an extraordinarily rich wildlife and primate experience without the cost of a second $800 gorilla permit.

        EXTENSIONS AND COMBINATIONS

This itinerary extends naturally in several directions:

Add Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park for mountain gorilla trekking by continuing south from Ishasha, a drive of around four to five hours through the Kigezi highlands. This extends the trip to 6 days and turns it into a complete primate-and-wildlife circuit. Ask us for a quote on this extension when booking.

Add Murchison Falls National Park to the north for Big Five game viewing, a Nile boat cruise to the base of the falls, and the option of a second chimpanzee trekking experience in Budongo Forest. Our 10-Day Uganda Grand Safari covers all four parks (Murchison, Kibale, Queen Elizabeth, and Bwindi) in a single comprehensive circuit.

For travelers heading onward to Rwanda, this circuit can be extended south from Bwindi to Kigali via the Cyanika or Katuna border crossings. Browse our Uganda Rwanda Safaris for cross-border itinerary ideas.

WHY TRAVEL WITH PICK AND TRANSFER SAFARIS

At Pick and Transfer Safaris, we built this 4-day circuit for travelers who want maximum wildlife diversity without a long road commitment. We know both routes into and between these parks well, and our driver-guides are skilled spotters on both the Kasenyi game tracks and the forest trails of Kibale. We secure your chimpanzee permit directly through the Uganda Wildlife Authority, choose lodges for proximity to each park’s key activities rather than for marketing appeal, and keep our pricing honest and transparent throughout. A share of our proceeds also supports community projects through the Kigezi Foundation.

        READY TO BOOK?

Chimpanzee permits at Kibale are limited and fill up in peak season. Contact our team with your preferred travel dates, group size, starting point (Entebbe or Kampala), and accommodation preference, and we will confirm permit and lodge availability and send you a personalised, no-obligation quote within 24 hours.
