This itinerary is built around a single overnight stay in Uganda, sandwiched between two relatively short drives from Kigali. TRAVEL PLAN
Day 1: Kigali to Mgahinga or Bwindi via Cyanika Border
Your guide picks you up early from your hotel in Kigali, and the journey begins with a scenic drive through Rwanda’s terraced hills toward the Cyanika border post, a journey of roughly three to four hours depending on road conditions. After completing border formalities, the drive continues a short distance into Uganda, arriving at either Mgahinga Gorilla National Park or the Rushaga area of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, depending on your permit allocation. After checking into your lodge and enjoying lunch, the afternoon is left free for rest, or can be used for an optional nature walk around the lodge grounds to start acclimatizing to the forest environment ahead of the following day’s trek. Dinner and an early night follow, as the trekking day begins with an early start.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking Day
This is the heart of the package. After an early breakfast, you’ll head to the park headquarters for a briefing from Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers, who explain trekking etiquette, safety guidelines, and share information about the gorilla family you’ve been assigned to visit. From there, small groups set off into the forest accompanied by guides and trackers, who use radio updates to locate the gorillas based on their movements that morning. The trek itself can range from a relatively short walk to a more demanding hike through dense vegetation and steep terrain, depending on where the family has moved. Once located, you’ll spend up to one hour observing the gorillas at close range as they feed, rest, and interact, an experience that consistently ranks among the most memorable wildlife encounters in Africa. After returning to the lodge for a late lunch, the rest of the afternoon is free to relax, with an optional visit to a local Batwa community for those interested in learning about the indigenous forest-dwelling people of the region.
Day 3: Return Journey to Kigali
After breakfast, depending on your assigned sector, the morning may include an optional activity such as golden monkey tracking if you’re based near Mgahinga, offering a lighter, more playful primate encounter to round out your trip. Once you’ve checked out of your lodge, the journey retraces the route back through the Cyanika border post into Rwanda, with the drive to Kigali taking a similar three to four hours. Depending on flight schedules, you’ll either be dropped directly at Kigali International Airport for an evening departure or returned to your hotel in the city, bringing this efficient gorilla trekking package to a close.

Choosing Between Mgahinga and Bwindi’s Rushaga Sector
Both Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and the Rushaga sector of Bwindi sit close to the Cyanika border, making either a realistic option for this itinerary, but they offer slightly different experiences. Mgahinga is home to a single habituated gorilla family and is the smaller, quieter of the two parks, with the added option of golden monkey tracking in the same forest. Rushaga, part of Bwindi, hosts a larger number of habituated families and is also where Uganda’s gorilla habituation experience takes place, offering more flexibility for permit availability. Booking Your Permit and Visa Requirements
Because gorilla permits in Uganda are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority and are strictly limited to eight visitors per gorilla family per day, booking well in advance is essential, particularly for travel during the June-to-September and December-to-February high seasons. Travelers will also need valid visas for both Rwanda and Uganda; Uganda’s e-visa, including the East Africa Tourist Visa where applicable, can be applied for through the official Uganda e-Visa portal, while entry requirements for Rwanda can be checked through the Visit Rwanda website.
