DESCRIPTION

Murchison Falls is the trip that convinces most first-time visitors that Uganda deserves a permanent place on their travel list. In just three days, you get the open savannah game drives of a classic East African safari, a boat cruise up one of the world’s great rivers, and the thunder of the Victoria Nile being forced through a gorge barely seven metres wide. This itinerary is built for travellers who want the full Murchison Falls experience without needing a week away from home, combining a northern game drive, the iconic launch cruise to the base of the falls, and a comfortable two-night stay inside one of Uganda’s most rewarding national parks.

Trip Highlights

Game drives across the northern savannah in search of lions, elephants, giraffes, and Uganda kob, a launch cruise along the Victoria Nile to the base of Murchison Falls itself, the option to hike to the top of the falls and feel the spray of the Devil’s Cauldron up close, and a scenic drive north through the Budongo Forest, with the option to add a stop at the Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch along the way.

TRAVEL PLAN

Day 1: Kampala/Entebbe to Murchison Falls National Park

Your driver-guide picks you up early from Kampala or Entebbe and heads north along the Gulu Highway, a drive of around four to five hours that passes through the Budongo Forest before opening into the savannah landscapes of the park’s southern section. Travellers who want to round out the Big Five often choose to break this journey at the Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch, roughly halfway to the park, where it is possible to track white rhinos on foot before continuing north. After entering the park through Kichumbanyobo Gate, you will check into your lodge, have lunch, and head out for an afternoon game drive across the northern plains, watching for lions, buffalo, giraffes, and the large herds of Uganda kob that dominate this part of the park. Dinner and overnight at your chosen lodge.

Today is built around contrast: the dry savannah in the morning and the river in the afternoon. After an early breakfast, you head out for a full morning game drive on the northern bank, when wildlife is most active and the light is at its best for photography. Expect strong chances of spotting lion prides, elephant herds heading to the river to drink, and Rothschild’s giraffes moving through the acacia woodland. Return to the lodge for lunch and a short rest before transferring to Paraa Jetty for the early afternoon launch cruise, the signature experience of any Murchison Falls safari. The boat travels upstream for around two hours, passing hippos, basking Nile crocodiles, and elephants at the water’s edge, before reaching the base of the falls themselves, where the spray and roar of the Nile compressing through its narrow gorge make for one of the most dramatic moments of any Uganda safari. Travellers who want to add the hike to the top of the falls can arrange this either as part of the cruise or with a ranger guide on the return drive. Overnight at your lodge.

After breakfast, enjoy one last opportunity for a short game drive or a relaxed morning at the lodge before checking out. Depending on time and interest, your guide can arrange a stop in the Budongo Forest Reserve on the drive south, where guided forest walks offer a chance to hear, and sometimes see, the chimpanzee community that lives within it. From there, the journey continues back to Kampala or Entebbe, arriving in the early evening, bringing your three-day Murchison Falls adventure to a close.

COST INCLUSIONS AND EXCLUSIONS

      • A private 4×4 safari vehicle with a fuel and an English-speaking driver-guide, two nights’ accommodation at a lodge or camp matching your chosen budget level, all meals as specified in the itinerary, park entry fees for Murchison Falls National Park, the launch cruise to the base of the falls, and bottled drinking water throughout the safari.

        What’s Excluded

International flights, visa fees, travel insurance, personal expenses such as souvenirs and laundry, tips for your driver-guide and lodge staff, and optional activities such as the hike to the top of the falls (where charged separately), the chimpanzee trek in Budongo Forest, and the Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch add-on.

        Best Time for This Safari

Murchison Falls rewards visitors throughout the year, but the dry seasons from December to February and June to September generally offer the easiest game viewing, the most reliable cruise conditions, and the best road access. The wetter months from March to May and October to November bring lush scenery, excellent birding, and noticeably fewer vehicles on the northern game-drive circuit, a good trade-off for travellers who prioritise atmosphere and photography over guaranteed dry roads.
