TRAVEL PLAN

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali – City Tour

On arrival at Kigali International Airport, your driver-guide meets you for the transfer to your hotel. Depending on your arrival time, the rest of the day is spent exploring Rwanda’s capital, often described as one of Africa’s cleanest and most welcoming cities.

The tour typically begins at the Kigali Genocide Memorial in Gisozi, the resting place of over 250,000 victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, and a sobering, essential stop for understanding the country’s recent history. From there, the day shifts to a lighter pace with stops at Inema Arts Center, one of Kigali’s leading contemporary art galleries, and a local craft cooperative or market such as Caplaki, where you can pick up Rwandan handicrafts directly from the artisans. Dinner and overnight at your hotel in Kigali.

After breakfast, depart Kigali for the drive east to Akagera, roughly two and a half to three hours on good tarmac roads through Rwanda’s terraced hillsides. Check in at your lodge and have lunch, then head out for an afternoon game drive across the Kilala Plains. Look out for buffalo, zebra, topi, and giraffe on the open grassland, with good chances of elephants near the water and your first opportunity to spot lion. Dinner and overnight at your lodge inside or near the park.

Start early with a morning game drive, the best time to find predators before the heat sets in — this is prime time for lion sightings, and with some luck, black or white rhino moving through denser bush. Return to the lodge for breakfast and a break through the warmer hours.

In the afternoon, take to the water for a boat safari on Lake Ihema, drifting past pods of hippos, basking Nile crocodiles, and papyrus-fringed shores alive with African fish eagles and other waterbirds — a completely different perspective on the park that no game drive offers. Dinner and overnight at your lodge.

Enjoy one final morning game drive on your way out of the park, making the most of the cooler hours for any wildlife you may have missed. After breakfast, check out and begin the drive back to Kigali, arriving in the early-to-mid afternoon. Depending on your flight time, there may be room for a quick stop at a local market for last-minute souvenirs before drop-off at your hotel or Kigali International Airport.

        When to Go

Kigali is a comfortable, year-round city break thanks to its moderate high-altitude climate, while Akagera’s dry season (June–September and mid-December–mid-February) offers the most reliable wildlife sightings as animals concentrate around remaining water sources. The wetter months bring lush scenery and quieter lodges, though a 4×4 remains essential on park roads. For more detail on each destination, see our Akagera National Park and Kigali City destination guides.

        Extend Your Trip

This itinerary works well as a standalone introduction to Rwanda, or as the wildlife-and-culture half of a longer journey.
