Uganda: Akagera National Park
3 Days | 2 Nights
From $2,000 Per Person
Just two and a half to three hours from Kigali City, Akagera National Park is Rwanda’s only savannah park and the country’s sole Big Five destination. This 3-day itinerary gives you enough time to properly explore the Kilala Plains, cruise Lake Ihema by boat, and head out on a night drive in search of leopards and hyenas — without rushing the experience into a single overnight stop.

| Best Time to Visit | June – September & mid-December – mid-February (dry season) |

After an early breakfast, your driver-guide picks you up from your hotel in Kigali for the road transfer east to Akagera, a smooth tarmac drive of roughly two and a half to three hours that passes through Rwanda’s terraced hills and the town of Kayonza before reaching the park’s southern Kiyonza Gate.
You’ll check in at your lodge and settle in over lunch, then head out for an afternoon game drive across the Kilala Plains as the heat softens and wildlife becomes more active. Look out for buffalo, zebra, topi, impala, and giraffe grazing the open grassland, with good chances of elephants near the water and, with some patience, your first sighting of lion. Dinner and overnight at your chosen lodge inside or near the park — options range from the lakeside Ruzizi Tented Lodge to the budget-friendly Akagera Rhino Lodge, or the exclusive Magashi Camp in the park’s private northern concession.
Rise early for a morning game drive, the best time to find predators before they retreat from the midday heat. This is prime time for spotting lions resting in the shade, black or white rhino moving through denser bush, and the elephant herds that gather near the park’s lakes. Return to the lodge for breakfast and a break through the warmest hours of the day.
In the afternoon, take to the water for a boat safari on Lake Ihema, drifting past pods of hippos, basking Nile crocodiles, and papyrus-fringed shores alive with African fish eagles and other waterbirds — a completely different perspective on the park that no game drive can match. As evening falls, an optional night drive offers your best chance of spotting nocturnal wildlife such as leopards, hyenas, civets, and bush babies under the rooftop spotlight of a safari vehicle. Dinner and overnight again at your lodge.
Enjoy one final morning game drive on your way out of the park, taking advantage of the cooler hours for any wildlife you may have missed — rhino, leopard, or simply a last look at the Kilala Plains in the early light. After breakfast, check out of your lodge and begin the drive back to Kigali, arriving in the early-to-mid afternoon in time for your onward flight or city plans. Drop-off at your Kigali hotel or Kigali International Airport.
Akagera rewards visitors year-round, but the dry season (June–September and mid-December–mid-February) opens up the landscape and concentrates wildlife around remaining water sources, making sightings more predictable. The wetter months (March–May and October–mid-December) bring lush green scenery, excellent birdwatching, and quieter lodges, though a 4×4 remains essential on park roads.
