This action-packed day trip departs Kigali before sunrise, crosses into Uganda at the Cyanika border, and delivers you to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park — Uganda’s smallest national park, tucked beneath the volcanic peaks of Mount Muhabura, Mount Gahinga, and Mount Sabyinyo in the Virunga Mountains — in time for your gorilla trekking briefing.

After a full hour spent with Mgahinga’s habituated Nyakagezi gorilla family, you’ll head back across the border the same evening, arriving in Kigali in time for dinner. Your Day at a Glance

03:00 – 03:30: Early Pickup in Kigali Your driver-guide collects you from your hotel or from Kigali International Airport for the roughly 3 to 4-hour drive northwest toward the Uganda–Rwanda border. Coffee and a light snack are recommended before you set off — the early start is what makes the single-day round trip possible.

Around 06:30 – 07:00: Cyanika Border Crossing You’ll cross from Rwanda into Uganda at the Cyanika border post, one of the most convenient crossings for reaching Mgahinga and the southern sectors of Bwindi. Immigration formalities here are usually quick for travelers with the correct documentation — see the “Good to Know” section below for visa details.

Around 07:30 – 08:00: Arrival at Mgahinga Gorilla National Park From the border, it’s a short drive to Ntebeko, the park headquarters for Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. You’ll be welcomed with tea or coffee and a briefing from your Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger guide on trekking etiquette, safety, and what to expect.

08:00 – 13:00: Mountain Gorilla Trekking Set off into the bamboo and montane forest on the lower slopes of the Virunga volcanoes in search of the Nyakagezi family. Trekking times vary depending on where the gorillas are feeding that day, but once located, you’ll spend a magical hour at close range watching them feed, rest, and interact — all under the careful guidance of your ranger.

13:00 – 14:00: Lunch and Rest After descending and receiving your trekking certificate, enjoy a packed lunch near the park headquarters before beginning the return journey.

14:00 – 18:00: Return Drive to Kigali Retrace your route back across the Cyanika border into Rwanda and on to Kigali, with a comfort stop along the way. Depending on border traffic and your trekking time, you should arrive back in Kigali in the early evening, in time for dinner or a connecting flight.

  Good to Know Before You Go
  - Minimum age: Gorilla trekking is open to travelers aged 15 and above.
  - Fitness: Mgahinga’s terrain is steep and can be muddy, especially in the wet season. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended, and walking poles are useful.
  - What to pack: Sturdy waterproof hiking boots, long trousers and sleeves, a rain jacket, gardening gloves, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a camera without flash. Pack light, as everything will travel with you for the day.
  - Permits: Gorilla permits for Mgahinga are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority and are limited — Mgahinga has only one habituated gorilla family, so permits should be booked as far in advance as possible.
  - Visas: Many nationalities can use the East Africa Tourist Visa, a single multiple-entry visa covering Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya, which is ideal for this kind of same-day border crossing.
