DESCRIPTION

Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda’s largest protected area and, for many travelers, the single most dramatic landscape in the country. Here, the entire volume of the Victoria Nile is forced through a gap in solid rock just seven metres wide before plunging 43 metres into a churning gorge, a natural spectacle so violent and concentrated that early European explorers struggled to describe it without resorting to superlatives that still sound, to this day, entirely justified. Around that single waterfall stretches a 3,840-square-kilometre wilderness of open savannah, riverine woodland, and one of Uganda’s largest natural forests, supporting elephants, lions, giraffes, leopards, and one of the richest birding checklists of any park in East Africa.

This 3-day safari is the most efficient way to experience Murchison Falls properly from Entebbe or Kampala. It opens with a stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, the only place in Uganda to track wild white rhinos on foot, continues with a full day inside the park covering a game drive, the iconic Nile boat cruise to the base of the falls, and an optional hike to the top of the gorge, and closes with chimpanzee trekking in Budongo Forest before the return drive south. In three days, you cover four of the Big Five (lion, elephant, leopard, and buffalo, with the fifth, rhino, seen separately at Ziwa), a chimpanzee trek, one of Africa’s most powerful waterfalls, and a boat safari on the Nile, all without needing to commit to a longer multi-park circuit.

Murchison Falls sits roughly 300 kilometres north of Entebbe, considerably closer than Uganda’s southwestern parks, making it the natural choice for travelers who want a substantial wildlife experience within a tight three-day window, or who are looking for an add-on to a longer Uganda trip that does not require backtracking through the southwest. At Pick and Transfer Safaris, we handle the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary fee, all Murchison Falls park entry fees, the Nile boat cruise, your Budongo chimp permit, accommodation, and the full private transport, so the only planning left to you is choosing your lodge category.

If you want to combine Murchison Falls with Uganda’s other major parks into a single circuit, our 10-Day Uganda Grand Safari covers Murchison Falls, Kibale, Queen Elizabeth, and Bwindi back to back. For chimpanzee trekking at Kibale instead, see our 3-Day Chimpanzee Tour in Uganda, and for a wildlife-focused combination of Queen Elizabeth and Kibale, see our 4 Days Wildlife and Primate Safari. TRAVEL PLAN

Day 1: Entebbe to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary to Murchison Falls National Park

Your safari begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel in Entebbe or Kampala. The drive north covers approximately 170 kilometres to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary near Nakasongola, taking around two to three hours on a good tarmac road through Uganda’s central agricultural belt.

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary was established in 2005 to reintroduce and breed white rhinos in Uganda, after the species was completely wiped out by poaching and civil conflict in the 1970s and 1980s. The sanctuary now protects Uganda’s only population of free-ranging white rhinos, and a guided walking safari of one to two hours brings you to within a safe, ranger-supervised distance of these enormous, surprisingly placid animals. The sanctuary’s wetlands and woodland are also a good early stop for birdwatchers, with sightings of the shoebill stork occasionally reported.

After rhino tracking, continue north through Masindi town for a lunch stop, before the final leg into Murchison Falls National Park itself. As you approach the park, the agricultural landscape gives way to open savannah and riverine woodland, and a short game drive en route to your lodge often produces early sightings of kob, warthog, or buffalo. Arrive at your lodge near the Paraa area in the late afternoon, with time to settle in, enjoy the river views, and rest ahead of the first full day of activities tomorrow.

Meals: Lunch, Dinner

This is the heart of the safari, and a genuinely full day. After an early breakfast, cross the Victoria Nile by the Paraa ferry and head into the northern bank of the park for a morning game drive. The northern sector is Murchison Falls’ premier game-viewing area, a vast, rolling savannah that supports one of Uganda’s largest elephant populations, alongside Rothschild’s giraffes (a species found in only a handful of locations in East Africa), lions, leopards, spotted hyenas, buffaloes, Ugandan kob, Jackson’s hartebeest, oribi, and waterbuck. The open terrain and long sightlines, with the Albert Nile delta and the distant Congo escarpment visible on clear mornings, make this one of the most photogenic game drives in Uganda. Allow two to three hours.

After returning to the lodge for lunch, the afternoon is dedicated to the park’s signature experience: a two-hour boat cruise on the Victoria Nile from Paraa upstream to the base of Murchison Falls. This stretch of river is extraordinarily rich in wildlife, with massive hippo pods lining the banks, large numbers of Nile crocodiles basking in the sun, elephants frequently coming down to drink or bathe, and a constant procession of waterbirds, including African fish eagles and, with luck, the shoebill stork in the quieter channels. As the boat approaches the falls, the river narrows dramatically and the roar of the water becomes audible well before the falls themselves come into view: the entire Nile forced through a gap just seven metres wide, plunging 43 metres into the gorge below in a permanent cloud of spray and rainbow.

For those with the time and energy, the day can conclude with an optional hike to the top of the falls, a roughly 45-minute uphill walk from the boat jetty that brings you to the very lip of the gorge, where you can look straight down into the thundering water from above. The combination of the boat-level and overhead perspectives gives an unusually complete sense of the falls’ scale and violence. Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After an early breakfast, cross the Nile and head south to Budongo Forest, part of the wider Murchison Falls Conservation Area and the largest natural forest remaining in Uganda. Budongo holds an estimated 600 to 700 chimpanzees across several communities, with two groups habituated for daily trekking at the Kaniyo Pabidi and Busingiro sites. Compared to Kibale Forest further south, Budongo is considerably less visited, offering a quieter, more intimate trekking experience, though with slightly less certainty of finding the chimps than at Kibale’s larger, more thoroughly habituated communities.

After a briefing from your Uganda Wildlife Authority ranger guide, you set off into Budongo’s tall mahogany and ironwood forest, one of the most botanically significant forests in East Africa and a key site for ongoing chimpanzee research by Makerere University and the Budongo Conservation Field Station. Once the trackers locate the community, you will spend up to one hour observing the chimps feeding, travelling, and interacting in the canopy and understorey. Budongo’s forest is also an outstanding birding destination, holding several species found nowhere else in Uganda, and many travelers find the walk itself, through ancient, undisturbed forest, every bit as memorable as the chimpanzee sighting.

After the trek, begin the drive south back toward Entebbe or Kampala, retracing the route through Masindi. The drive covers approximately 290 to 305 kilometers and takes around five to six hours, arriving in Entebbe in the evening in time for a connecting flight or your final night before departure.

GOOD TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

Minimum age: Chimpanzee trekking in Budongo Forest is open to travelers aged 15 and above. Rhino tracking at Ziwa, game drives, and the Nile boat cruise have no minimum age requirement, making this itinerary suitable for families with younger children.

Fitness: This is one of the more physically accessible Uganda safaris. The rhino walk at Ziwa and the game drives require no special fitness. The Budongo chimp trek can involve uneven forest terrain for up to a few hours, comparable to a moderate hike, and the optional hike to the top of the falls is a steady uphill walk of around 45 minutes. No technical fitness is required for any activity on this itinerary.

What to pack: For the rhino walk and game drives, light, neutral-coloured clothing, a hat, sunscreen, and binoculars. For the Budongo chimp trek, long trousers and sleeves, sturdy closed shoes, a light rain jacket, and insect repellent. Bring a swimsuit if your lodge has a pool overlooking the Nile, a feature of several Murchison Falls properties. A reasonable zoom lens or binoculars will significantly enhance the boat cruise, where wildlife is often viewed from a respectful distance on the water.

Permits and fees: Murchison Falls National Park entry fees for foreign non-residents are approximately $45 per person for 24 hours (2026 rate), included in this package. Budongo Forest chimpanzee trekking permits cost approximately $130 per person for foreign non-residents in peak season, slightly less in the off-peak months, also included in this package and booked through the Uganda Wildlife Authority on your behalf.

Best time to visit: Murchison Falls is rewarding throughout the year. The dry seasons (December to February and June to September) concentrate wildlife around the remaining water sources and offer the easiest driving conditions on the park’s internal tracks. The wet seasons (March to May and October to November) bring lush scenery, excellent birdwatching, and lower visitor numbers, though some interior roads can become more difficult after heavy rain. Chimpanzee trekking in Budongo is productive year-round.

Visas: Uganda visas can be applied for in advance through the Uganda e-Visa portal. Confirm your specific entry requirements before travel.

WHY MURCHISON FALLS DESERVES ITS OWN TRIP

Murchison Falls is often treated as a single stop within a longer Uganda circuit, typically bolted onto the start or end of a trip to the southwest. That approach undersells the park considerably. Murchison is Uganda’s largest protected area, its game drives rival anything found in Queen Elizabeth National Park, its boat cruise is arguably the single best wildlife cruise experience in the country, and the falls themselves are a genuine natural wonder regardless of what else is on your itinerary. Giving the park three focused days, rather than a single rushed overnight en route elsewhere, allows you to properly experience the game drive, the cruise, the hike, and the chimp trek without compressing any of them.

Murchison’s location also makes it a smart standalone choice for travelers with limited time who do not want the long drive to Uganda’s southwestern parks. At roughly five to six hours from Entebbe by road, it is considerably more accessible than Bwindi, Kibale, or Queen Elizabeth, all of which sit eight or more hours to the southwest.

        EXTENSIONS AND COMBINATIONS

This 3-day Murchison Falls safari extends naturally into a longer Uganda circuit:

Continue south from Murchison Falls to Kibale Forest National Park for a second, more reliably productive chimpanzee trekking experience, and onward to Queen Elizabeth National Park for savannah game drives and the Kazinga Channel boat cruise. Our 10-Day Uganda Grand Safari follows exactly this route, continuing further south to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park for mountain gorilla trekking.

For travelers who want Murchison Falls alongside a shorter southwestern add-on, our 4 Days Wildlife and Primate Safari covering Queen Elizabeth and Kibale pairs naturally as a second leg of the same trip, with Entebbe as the connecting hub between the two itineraries.

WHY TRAVEL WITH PICK AND TRANSFER SAFARIS

At Pick and Transfer Safaris, we treat Murchison Falls as a destination in its own right, not just a stopover, and this itinerary reflects that. We know the Ziwa-to-Masindi-to-Para route well, time the Para ferry crossing to avoid unnecessary waiting, and work with lodges that put you close to the boat jetty and game tracks rather than at the edge of the park. We secure your Budongo chimp permit directly through the Uganda Wildlife Authority and keep our vehicle, guide, and lodge pricing honest throughout. A share of our proceeds also supports community projects through the Kigezi Foundation.
